Know what is behind the answer.

Useful insight needs clear sources, fair comparisons, and honest limits. Here is how to read this edition.

Start with the source.

The original National Consumer Intelligence brief by Christopher C. Herring is our starting point for the learning topics. The brief is an author-supplied strategic overview. Its market forecasts and survey percentages are not republished here as verified findings.

The source spotlights link to BLS, the U.S. Census Bureau, NIST, and the FTC. They explain what a source can help you learn. We do not claim to collect or own those agencies' records.

Read the source record.

The source catalog identifies coverage, periods, update expectations, and limits. The Bexar County profile includes three selected Census QuickFacts measures verified on October 18, 2026. The evidence guide distinguishes published measurements, estimates, teaching examples, and planned products.

A lesson is different from a measurement.

The $100 grocery example is made up to teach share of wallet. The glossary explains terms. Neither is a survey result or a measured picture of American households.

A future dataset needs a release record.

Before a consumer dataset is offered for sale, its release should state the source, period, geography, field definitions, cleaning checks, missing values, permitted uses, version, and delivery terms. No such paid release is included in this edition.

Keep places and people straight.

A national average does not describe every neighborhood. A postal ZIP Code and a Census ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) are different areas. A future place-based product must state the geography and use a checked crosswalk when needed.

Check who may be missing.

Receipts, surveys, and online activity show different parts of consumer life. A group may be left out. A change may have several causes. A pattern alone does not prove that one thing caused another.

Correct the record.

Send a source, page link, and description of a possible error to the contact form. We review corrections and update the page when needed.
