Spending & Value

Follow the family budget.

A shopping receipt tells one story. A whole budget tells a bigger one.

Start with a simple question

Where does a family spend its money? Food is one part. Housing, travel, and other needs also shape each choice. A store receipt cannot show the whole picture.

What this source measures

The Consumer Expenditure Surveys collect information about spending, income, and households in the United States. This helps us study how different groups spend.

Try this

Put your costs into groups, such as home, food, and travel. Compare the same time period. Ask what is left after the biggest needs are paid for.

Use the numbers with care

A group average is not every family's budget. Check the survey year, the group being measured, and the notes before making a claim.
